  • Hyatt Regency Kyoto
    The Hyatt Regency Kyoto offers excellent, spacious rooms, great on-site restaurants, attentive and polished service and a convenient location. 
  • Ritz-Carlton Kyoto
    The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto has arguably the best location of any hotel, right on the Kamo-gawa River and just steps from downtown. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, many with views of the river and the Higashiyama Mountains.
  • Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto
    The Four Seasons has a great location in Southern Higashiyama, a stunning building and grounds and some fantastic rooms. It’s a tranquil refuge in a busy city.
  • Kyoto Hotel Okura
    The Kyoto Hotel Okura is a fine hotel with extremely reasonable rates and an unbeatable downtown location (it’s directly connected to the Kyotoshiyakusho-mae subway station in the middle of downtown). 
  • Hotel Granvia Kyoto
    The Hotel Granvia Kyoto is an excellent hotel located directly above Kyoto Station, making it the city’s most convenient hotel for transport connections. Rooms are on the large side and well kept and there are countless restaurants with a few minutes of the lobby. It’s highly recommended.
  • Westin Miyako Kyoto Hotel
    An excellent hotel in a commanding location, near the subway and the main Higashiyama sights.
  • Kyoto Brighton Hotel
    A reasonably priced luxury hotel not far from the Kyoto Gosho (Imperial Palace), Kyoto Brighton Hotel is often overlooked but deserves more attention for its excellent restaurant, large rooms and capable staff.
  • Suiran
    If you want the feeling of being away from it all and surrounded by soothing natural scenery, the Suiran is a great choice. It overlooks the Hozu-gawa River in Arashiyama, and it’s just a short walk from the famed Tenryu-ji Temple, the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and the sublime Okochi-Sanso Villa.

Mid-Range Hotels:

  • Citadines Karasuma-Gojo Kyoto
    The Citadines Karasuma-Gojo Kyoto is an excellent serviced apartment-style hotel on Gojo-dori, in the heart of Kyoto. It’s close to Gojo subway station and within walking distance of downtown. I
  • Dormy Inn Premium Kyoto Ekimae
    The Dormy Inn Premium Kyoto Ekimae is a good-value upscale business hotel located directly across from Kyoto Station. There’s a great rooftop bath and many other interested features. Book 28 days or more in advance and get really cheap discount rates.
  • Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shijo
    The Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Shijo is a slightly upscale business hotel located just a bit west of the city center, but within walking distance of Shijo subway station.
  • Royal Park Hotel
    The Royal Park has a great location and service.
  • Daiwa Roynet Hotel Kyoto Shijokarasuma
    The Daiwa Roynet is an oddly named but decent hotel just south of the main downtown area. It’s within relatively easy walking distance of the southern Higashiyama sights and the restaurants downtown.
  • Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Sanjo
    The Mitsui Garden on Sanjo is a business hotel with quite a few extras thrown in. It’s a short walk from the Karasuma-Oike subway station.
  • Hotel Unizo
    The Hotel Unizo is a reasonably priced business hotel right in downtown Kyoto – most of Kyoto’s nightlife and dining options are within easy walking distance.
  • Hotel Monterey Kyoto
    The Monterey Kyoto is a step up from a business hotel. It’s conveniently located right on Karasuma-dori, within walking distance of all of downtown Kyoto.
  • Best Western Hotel Kyoto
    The Best Western Hotel Kyoto is a great hotel right in the heart of the city. It’s a stone’s throw from some great restaurants and two subway stations.
  • Hotel Hokke Club Kyoto
    The Hotel Hokke Club Kyoto is a well-kept business hotel directly north of Kyoto Station. Like other branches of this nationwide chain, it’s good value for the money.


    Budget Hotels:

    • Hotel Sunroute Kyoto
      The Hotel Sunroute Kyoto is an excellent-value budget to moderate hotel located just south of the downtown shopping district on Kawaramachi-dori. 
    • Toyoko Inn Kyoto Gojo-Karasuma
      Like all the other branches in this chain, the Toyoko Inn Kyoto Gojo Karasuma is a great value for the money. The rooms are small but packed with features. It’s within walking distance of both Shijo and Gojo subways stations, as well as downtown.
    • Super Hotel Shijyo Kawaramachi
      The Super Hotel Shijyo Kawaramachi is a no-frills business hotel that is perfect for single travelers. It’s right downtown, very close to Nishiki Market.
    • Palace Side Hotel
      An inexpensive traveler’s hotel next to the Imperial Palace, The Palace Side Hotel is a decent choice for budget travelers who want to be based in midtown.
    • Capsule Ryokan Kyoto
      Capsule Ryokan Kyoto is a Japanese capsule hotel with traditional Kyoto touches. In addition to the capsules on the first floor, there are several floors of excellent private rooms. This place, which is completely at home with foreign travelers, is a great budget choice. It’s a short walk north of Kyoto Station.
    • Hotel Mystays Kyoto
      Hotel Mystays Kyoto is a good budget business hotel on Shijo-dori, just west of downtown. It’s within easy walking distance of Karasuma Shijo subway station.
