Utsuwa Akando

Once you step into this store, you will be surrounded with mounds of serving wares all strikingly beautiful with different characteristics. Many pieces are from Showa era (1926 – 1989) and Taisho period (1912 – 1926), but not limited to as there are also modern pieces in the store. Local regular customers come in on weekly bases to look for items of their own taste and pick out items that equal to be their personal treasures. Not only do collectors frequent this store, but those from Japanese cuisine restaurants, usually on seasonal bases, often look for serving wares to use for their dishes.

There is a good amount of lacquerware to choose from. Different shades of vermillion colors are so appealing especially the ones with detailed work. Each one goes through many steps until it becomes a finished product. On some of the pieces, you can visually see the layers of paint. Because it requires a long procedure, usually the prices match its worth, however, they are considered reasonable compared to new items.
O-choko, or the little cups used to drink Japanese sake, are something you would want to consider to get as a souvenir of your trip.
The store is full of plates of various shapes and finishes. Not only do they carry Kyoto style porcelains like Kiyomizu Yaki, but they also carry pieces from all over Japan. Notice that there are multiples of the same kind; however, you can buy just one plate.
