If you are planning on traveling around Kyoto, we recommend you purchase Day Passes. They are convenient and might save you money! These tickets are sold by various companies that control different sections of the Kyoto train, subway, and bus network. Unfortunately there is no “universal pass” that covers everything, but you can do some research and choose the pass that suits your needs.

JAPAN RAIL PASS
Ticket Conditions
The Japan Rail Pass is valid on all JR lines across Japan, including the useful shinkansen (bullet trains), the Tokyo Monorail, part of the Aoimori Railway, the JR Miyajima ferry, and local JR buses. This pass is best for those travelling between different cities and regions of Japan. The shinkansen is the most convenient way to travel between cities such as Kyoto and Tokyo, although please note that the Japan Rail Pass cannot be used on all types of shinkansen (including the Nozomi and Mizuho trains).
(1) MAKE A RESERVATION
A voucher must be purchased from within your home country. Please see “How to Reserve a Japan Rail Pass” below.
(2) ACTIVATE YOUR RAIL PASS
Once you’re in Japan, make your way to the closest Exchange Office (see here for locations: www.japanrailpass.net/en/exchange.html) and exchange your voucher for a rail pass. You will need your passport for this procedure. Your pass will then be valid for the decided time period following the date of exchange. This cannot be altered once the voucher has been exchanged.
(3) BOOK SEATS
For most JR services, a booking is not required. But you may wish to book a seat in advance for peace of mind or to get a nice window seat. With the Rail Pass, no additional fee is required when reserving seats on JR trains. To reserve a seat for the shinkansen or Express trains, go to the counter at a JR Ticket Office and speak to the staff.
(4) USE THE PASS
To access the train platform simply show your Rail Pass to the JR staff located at the gate, who will wave you on through. Always carry your passport along with the Pass, as staff may ask to check it.
CANCELLATION
The voucher is refundable for one year if it has never been exchanged at a ticket office. A cancellation fee of 10% of the value of the pass will be charged.
ATTENTION!
■ No refund will be given for passes for which the date of validation has expired.
■ No refund will be given for a lost or stolen pass.
